Motherboard Change - Hal Question

Hello everyone :)

I used to have the documentation on how to do what I am about to request but
I lost it a few years ago, and have never been able to find it again - so Im
hoping I can get some help here.

I have a client whose motherboard needs replacing (current mobo is dead).
They have no current backup, and they Insist they do not want to do a repair
of the OS. Can someone please explain to me what to do/what files to modify
so that windows 2000 can kick in once the new motherboard is put it. ( or
email it to me at: incoming [at] tech-for-hire [dot] com )

Assistance will be greatly appreciated - Thank you

The procedure in MSKB824125 recently worked reasonably well for me.

To get my existing W2000 installation to adapt to the new mobo, I used the
procedure defined as "Replace a failed motherboard" in this article:

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server
2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125

Everything wasn't perfect at first. I had to reinstall the roll-up1 for SP4, IE6
SP1, the latest DirectX, my antivirus utility, a few drivers, and about three
trips to the MS update site, but all-in-all it sure beats reinstalling
everything again.

One note of caution, be sure that your OS setup CD contains the same SP version
as the installed OS. If not, create a new CD with SP4 slipstreamed. Note that
even when using a slipstreamed CD during the repair install, Windows may ask for
the SP4 CD, simply continue using the slipstreamed CD at this prompt.

Thank you very much for your reply. Most of us are aware of the method
described in the link you posted - but I am after the coveted directions on
how to do it manually - which it can be done, as I had the directions before
but I was newly married and soon learned the danger of sharing your pc with a
family... and lost my oh so coveted archive of tech tips...

MS Gurus.....please share this knowledge.

thank you

Check out the proc in this link:

If that's not what you're looking for then I'd suggest starting a new thread
since I don't think you'll be getting anymore hits on this one.

OH MAN! What did you do different than what I was doing to find this!

Yes! Yes! Whoooo Hoooooo! - Im so happy! I have been trying to find this
info for years but never really pursued it since the situation never came up
until a few days ago!

Seriously did you already have this or did you search for it?

WoW either way - Thank you Snarky Parker.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

I've seen this procedure before but it looked too cumbersome to use so I never
saved it. I used Google to find it again.

Good luck!
