TWIMC,
My desktop computer running Windows XP Pro. starts up fine - the monitor displays the normal startup stuff, including the XP windows icon plus blue scrolling bar, then when the pleasant welcome sound plays, the screen switches to passive or standby mode. Nothing I can physically do to the monitor changes this, and I've tried different monitors - it isn't the monitor. I think the problem is windows XP. Note that if i blindly press [Window key], , [left arrow], [enter] (which selects "turn off" from the start menu, i get the 'pleasant closing' sound and the computer shuts down, so I guess the actual OS is working 'underneath'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
-Geoff

Hi Geoff,

The only time I've seen exactly this problem is with a dual-monitor setup
that was incorrectly configured.

Does your system have 2 monitor outputs? I don't know about other
manufacturers, but quite a few Dells that I have seen have both an on-board
monitor connection (ie one on the motherboard) and a (usually) higher-spec
one as an additional card.

If this is the case, try switching your monitor cable to the other connector
and see what happens.

Good Luck,

ChrisM

Hi Geoff,

I'm also suffering the same problem as yours, have u found a solution yet. Kindly post the solution. Mine is a Win XP Home, monitor goes into standby mode even as the PC is booting, does not even stays on till I can enter safe mode (F8) and if I try to enter BIOS setup, goes into standby mode in fraction of a second. But the PC boots up and shuts down properly. I'm going nuts, please help me. It has only on-board graphic card.
