monitor setup for projectors

I have needed technical support a number of times to set
up the monitor on my Preserio 900 laptop. Later when I
want to do a presentation I seem to have lost
communication between the laptop and the projector. No
amount of fiddling with the display setting in control
panel allowed me to retrieve communication with the
projector, a recent Viewsonic. I have the same problem
trying to display Powerpoint on TV. Any suggestions?

You may have to switch the video out port on with a set of keystrokes (I
think on Compaq laptops it used to be the little "Fn" key on the bottom left
of the keyboard + f4 or f5).
