WinXP does NOT recognize projector

I built a WinXP-based home theater PC (HTPC). I have a BenQ PE7700 projector
hooked up to it via HDMI (DVI-to-HDMI adapter), which essentially is just a
monitor. However, XP only recognizes it as a plug-n-play device, instead of
a, well, BenQ PE7700 device, even with the latest video drivers. This means
XP boots in 800x600, and I have to manually set the resolution to 1280x720.
So what can I do to get XP recognize the projector.

HDMI should support DDC. That is how Windows would normally get
information from the display device. A video card may also do
"impedance sensing" or use some other physical characteristic
like that, to detect something new has been plugged in. DDC is
used to do the querying after that.

You can use this Entechtaiwan utility, to see what is coming
across via DDC.

Now, my current monitor supports DDC and EDID, and yet my
monitor is *not* displayed correctly in WinXP. At least
I'm not denied the resolution setting I want to use. I
installed a "monitor driver", to get the name to appear
correctly. Not all display device manufacturers include
a "monitor driver". The monitor driver is normally used
to add color management information, and its intention
is not to just replace Plug and Play.

There is no driver here.

Good luck,

Is the projector turned on while the machine is booting up?

If not, Windows often defaults to some minimal resolution

Yes the projector is on when I boot up.

Thanks I will play with those utilities, and yes I looked at the BenQ site
for drivers and like you found none.
