What is the best way to use an external modem on a laptop without physically
removing the inbuilt modem.Can I have both installed and use either
one.Will their software clash?

Hi,

Yes, you can install both modems and use as per your requirement. To do so
you can connect the external modem to the serial port of the modem and load
device drivers. After configuring the modem.

Go to my network places and click on create new connection and configure to
your ISP and select the new external modem.
