Windows 98 would remember that I have a modem even if the
modem wasn't switched on when the computer was started (I
live in Spain ... not advisable to leave anything connected
too long here). With Windows XP (home edition), however,
unless the modem is switched on, I am told that I do not
have a modem. The modem is there in the device manager but
when I open the modem utility in the control panel I am
told that the modem is not present. If I plug in the modem
and restart Windows XP, the modem magically reappears.

Any solution, anybody?

Thanks

Hello

Try replacing your modem or even maybe making sure
that you have a the most currect driver installed for it
