Modem speed please help

I got XP on a new modern 2600 PC and can only get connection speed of about
31 K with my Intel 536EP modem.
Ihave tried my laptop running Win 98 and get 44K so the line and isp seem
OK.
Can u help please

You should get at least 50K regardless of ISP. Do you have overhead
telephone cables outside? If so, that is your problem.
