MODEM SETUP STRING

Can anyone please tell me where the modem setup string information is located
in Windows XP? I have search the internet and cannot find anything other
than other people asking the same question!!! I can find it when I look
under 'Connectivity Summary' in 'System Information' associated with AOL (not
the XP System Information). There it shows:

AT&F&C1&D2W2S6=5S7=60S10=15X4^M

However, I cannot change it there as it will not allow one to enter anything
in the box that shows the setup information.

So, next question is where can I alter the modem setup string in XP?

Also, where is the modem setup string info found in the registry? I cannot
find it anywhere.

Thanks for any help.

If I remember correctly... This in the Phone and Modem in the Control panel
and it is there.

I believe its under diagnostics - theres another tab where you can change
the modem init string and I suggest: AT&F or ATF

Hi, Robert,

I had already checked all those place. You can query the modem and get the
commands, but it is not the same as the setup string. You can add to the
initialization string under the Advanced tab, but the ones that already exist
are not shown. It is absolutely unbelievable that this information cannot be
found anywhere easily on the computer or any information by Microsoft on how
to view and change the modem setup string. I have literally spent several
hours trying to find this information. It is very, very frustrating and
makes me quite angry with Microsoft. No one seems to know, even where it
resides in the registry.

You would think this info must be somewhere in the registry. I did find
this on the internet, but it mustn't apply to XP:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000 --

There is no 'Class' found under 'Services' in that path, so that put an end
to that.

If you come up with anything, please let me know.

Device Manager, Modem, Properties, Advanced.

In registry, select My Computer, then Edit, Find and paste in what
you're lookin for.

I would be cautious about messing about there

Thanks, Bob, for your reply, but the modem string information is not there,
which was what I indicated in my e-mail to Robert as I had already checked
that out. One can supposedly enter extra initialization commands there, but
one cannot view the setup string currently in use. If one queries the modem,
one can see a setup string there, but it does not match the one listed in AOL
System Information. So, I don't know which one is correct, if either is
correct.

As I said, based on my internet search I am not the only person wondering
where the hell this information is in XP and / or how to freakin' view it and
/ or change it.

Is that the init string in the modems NVRAM? In that case you can change
it useing Hyperterm.

Start button, control panel, phone and modems options. Click on the modem
tab then at the bottom of the modem tab click on properties. The next box
will offer a variety of choices but choose the advanced tab. Now you can
enter your extra setting in the box that is listed as "extra initialization
settings"
Hope this helps.

Is the AOL one stored in the AOL dial config?

I am not sure where the AOL dial config is loated, unless it is what is shown
under AOL System Properties (right click AOL desktop icon) -> Connectivity
Summary. This is what is shown there:
AT&F&C1&D2W2S6=5S7=60S10=15X4^M

When the modem is queried in Windows, this is what is located in the log in
Modem Properties:
AT&FE1&C1&D2&K3V1W3S0=0+PCW=0

I don't know which is correct. Maybe the AOL one overrides the string in
the modem itself. the +PCW=0 in the lower string means that modem-on-hold is
enabled, but AOL somehow disables that option to try to force dial up users
to signup for their caller id service. And, as you can see, the +PCW=0 is
not in the AOL string.

Hi, John,

Yes, I realize I can add there, but I want to see what is in the string
already and to see what is there after I attempt to add something. Hence,
all my questions about where to view the actual setup string.

Thanks,

1. locate the documentation for your modem
2. Start Hyperterm
3. Key in command you found in modem manual.
