Modem saring

How do I start to connect to a remote modem.

If I go through my local area connection it tells me the port (com3
{modem} share on the remote computer) is unaccessible. The other computer
has all the permissions I can stack onto com3, and indicates an active
connection.

I tried putting the remote computer line (\\PETE\COM3) into he dialer and
that didn't work.

Presumably you are trying to dial up via this remote modem? have you set the
modem for Internet Connection Sharing?

I hope to get a wifi router for my desktop so I can move about with my laptop. Having only dial-up, I'd need to use the desktop's modem.

Being new to XP and no good at networking in general I'm not sure what you are asking. I went into a process I think had that name, but it looked to me like it was setting up so the remote (desktop in this case) could use the laptop (XP) modem and I ended it.

On the machine with he modem in, go to Start-Connect To-Show All
Connections. Right-click on the dial-up connection and select Properties. Go
to the Advanced Tab, and under Internet Connection Sharing, check the box
"allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet
connection"

Are you saying XP looks for an XP specific setup on the other computer and
can't connect to a remote modem without it?

Can you refresh my mind with what you are trying to accomplish? Are you a)
trying to dial-in to a remote computer (not an ISP) or are you b) wanting to
access the internet via a remote machine that has a modem installed or
attached?

My purpose is to wifi into a remote computer and use its modem in a "local
roaming" fashion. However I can't even get in by wire, let alone wifi.

Why not use the router connection directly? My budget won't permit a high
speed connection for some time and I can't find a wifi router with a
dial-up port.
