Problem accessing COM3

I have an internal modem jumpered for COM3 & IRQ 5 (motherboard ports 1 & 2
are iin use for other devices). This always worked in the past, but I
recently had to reinstall the OS and now I can't access the modem. Scanning
for new hardware doesn't detect the modem. If I try to install manually, it
shows no ports available for the modem to connect to. If I try installing
COM3 manually first, it always comes up as COM4 with an error message
(understandable, since I have assigned it to the COM3 base address). The
info in article 112584 is no help, because my control panel doesn't have a
"ports option" and the registry has _no_ entries under
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Serial\Parameters. Can
anyone tell me how to install COM3 under Windows 2000?

"uninstall/remove" the modem in device manager. Shutdown the PC. remove
the modem. Start to pc up. Now follow the manufacturers instructions for
installing the modem.
