No COM Port for Modem

I purchased a used IBM T30 for my father, and cannot get the Modem to work.
The Modem seems to be installed and working, but the COM3 Port is not listed
in the Device Manager, so the Modem is unusable. I followed the Windows 2000
Troubleshooter guidance and created a new Port, but it is listed as being in
error (unknown device) in the Device Manager, and is also listed as being "in
use" and not available to assign to the Modem. I have tried
uninstalling/reinstalling the modem, but even this does not help. I also
installed SP4, to see if that might help. It did not.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem, or know how to fix this? Any
assistance is appreciated!

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices. Make sure the card slot driver is working correctly. Make sure you
use the modem manufacturer's installation routine.

Dave, Thank you for the prompt response. I just checked Event Viewer and
found the following error reported:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Serial
Event Category: None

Description:
While validating that \Device\Serial1 was really a serial port, the contents
of the divisor latch register was identical to the interrupt enable and the
receive registers. The device is assumed not to be a serial port and will be
deleted.
Data:

Does this help to pinpoint the problem?

This error message indicates a com port entry for a non-existent port.
Solution is to delete the non-existent port from Device Manager and the
error should go away.

Are the COM ports enabled in the BIOS?

if no BIOS, windows can't see it. The modem itself may be registering
itself as a COM port, so the BIOS COM port conflicts with the modem's
registration. This is always difficult to pinpoint and get exactly right.

It's a balance between BIOS settings and the modem.

If both are enabled, both might or might not work
if BIOS is not enabled, and the modem needs the BIOS setting to work, it
won't work
if BIOS is enabled, and the modem doesn't need it -- it might work.

It's time to sit down at the machine for a few hours and toggle a bunch
of options and try to get it to work. Then try to get windows to see
it. then you might be able to go online....

(moral: get an ethernet card, and a broadband connection! :)

an extenal modem is easier to setup -- they require a COM port active in
the BIOS, plus you can actually see what's going on with the fancy
lights on the modem.

Good luck,
