Modem problem

Recenty I find it nearly impossible to make an internet connection
on my compaq presario 1200.Diagnostic checks say modem is working
ok.Tried removing and reinstalling the modem bur no good.When I try
to connect I get various messages, such as cannot connect with server or the
connection goes on for ever.Tried make new connections but same problem
occurs.
I loaded no new software recently .Any ideas as what I can try.

I have twice seen where these cheap 56K modems try to connect at too high a
rate on poor phone lines and always drop connection quickly. I just fixed by
replacing with old high quality 33.6K modem. Also, be sure modem is far from
video card as video card will cause interference.

Hello

Have you tried or considered replacing your modem
just to see if,that would change anything.
