Modem Problem

Hi

I have a problem with my modem disconnecting every time
after approc 3 mins.

I have Windows XP which is a new install and my old modem
had this problem from the very first go. I tried all
settings with no improvement.

I then purchased a new modem with built in chipset hoping
this would solve the problem. Again, no good.

I even tried placing the modem into different PCI slots in
case this was the problem.

Once again, no good.

This is extremely frustrating now.

The Disconnect when Idle has been turned off so it should
stay connected permanently.

Does anybody have any other suggestions.

By the way, the drivers are XP drivers that I installed
with the modem so the drivers should not be a problem.

Do you think if I got an external USB modem that the
problem would be solved?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Malcolm

You haven't said what brand or type of modem youhave....this is important, i
wouldn't mess with a software modem (Conexant etc or anything with a
Rockwell chipset) if you spend more money on a controller-based modem, i.e.
hardware modem you will have far fewer problems.
Some claim software modems are fine, i say they are crap.. I have always
bought USRobotics controller based modems and have had no problem with the
modem itself and very few connection problems because of beginning with a
decent piece of equipment from the start.
They aren't cheap (at almost 100 bucks) but you can find cheaper controller
based modems these days and aren't limited to USRobotics specifically..If
you can't find what you are looking for at a computer store, go to a
computer show and ask the vendors, although some don't know the difference
betweeen a software/hardware modem..Ask them if it is 'hardware' modem..
In the case you are interested; the software modems are cheap for the OEMs
to buy and that is why they use them.. They use the CPU to do the work, a
hardware modem does the job without that load on the initial connection or
'handshake'...
The other reason you may have dropped connections is your Interent Service
provider... have you checked into that? Maybe it isn't your modem at all(?)
and you shouldn't have to use anyones drivers, just the native XP drivers,
which have worked fine for me..

From what you appear to be saying, it sounds like an
External modem connected via USB is the type of Hardware
modem you are talking about.

Thanks for the advice
