Modem problem with XP

Modem Help

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have a problem with my
modem. It connects usually around 33K. The computer is
about a yr old and has XP. I accepted my dial up speed
and blamed it on the phone lines in my area. Recently I
switched ISPs. With the new ISP I had problems with
disconnects. While trying to solve this issue i removed
the modem and reinstalled it inside of the ISPs login
software. I reinstalled a different version of my modem
this time and it connected at 56K. I'm sure it was legit
because I could notice the difference in speed. The
problem was I was still disconnecting. After weeks of
working with the tech people with this ISP, I gave up and
switched back to my old ISP. Now I'm back to the 33K.
With this ISP I did not have to install their software, I
just set up a dial up connection on my computer. Now I
cant find a way to change the modem to the other version
and I didnt get any software for the modem with the
computer. It is a Conexant Soft 56K. Does anyone have
any suggestions for me. I really want the faster
connection now that I know it is possible.
Thanks

Many factors influence connect speed, including compatibility between the
ISP's and your modem. Connecting at the highest speed isn't always the
best, and may result in disconnects. Realize also that modems may
renegotiate during a session - perhaps to a lower speed - and you won't
know if this occurs.

Well... I have a Contexant soft 56K modem that came with my
three-month-old emachine. You can download a generic driver from
http://www.conextant.com. It works better for me and is more recent
than the one suggested by windowsupdate. I downloaded it as
HSFp_WinXP.zip

If you have your modem and ports set above 57600, it might be an idea
to lower them to that level despite the logic that this gives the
computer a lofty goal. The connection seems more tenuous, or at least
I was having my connection icon disappear from the systray. Other than
that, you can go into control panel \network. Right-click for
properties. Under the networking tab, settings, clear all three boxes.
Okay. While you're in the neighborhood, go to the advanced tab and
confirm you have the firewall unless you already have this covered.

I don't know what the particular problem is, but I was having
disconnect problems with my Conexant 56K (PCI) modem and when
discussing it with a friend was asked how long the phone plug in
connection was from the outlet. It was quite far, so I replaced the
standard phone extension wire with the heavier, round, solid copper
type that is used to wire the house. Haven't had a disconnect since I
made the change and my average connect speed has up to 48K.
