modem not working

I have an internal PCI modem (USR 3CP5610) that I use as backup if DSL line
is down. IT worked under XP SP2, but under vista it doesn't. The device
manager shows it as working normally, but when I click diagnostics/querry
modem, the error is "the modem failed to respond".

Have you tried uninstalling the modem from under Device Manager, restart the
system then reinstall it and see it works then?

It is possible that the modem is a dud. I had a similar instance yesterday.
The drivers loaded and the modem checked out ok, but it simply would not
connect to anything. Replaced it with another modem, and everything was back
to working again..

yes. I did. I forced it to install. No change.

It is hard to imagine that the modem died at the same instant I installed
vista.

Maybe its just not compatible, even though Vista's Device Manager is
reporting is, I am sure you can get a cheap compatible modem that is
guaranteed to work with Vista. This is not 1992 ya know. Although I know
its an inconvenience.

I realize I can get a cheap modem, but it seems stupid to be buying a modem
in 2007. I guess it is less stupid that I felt last week when I actuall had
to buy floppy disks. I repair laptops and some of the hardware maintenance
programs will only run from an actual floppy disk. I wanted to put a bag
over my head when I went into the store for that.

Students here in Jamaica have to use Floppy disk for their Information
Technology Practical Examinations and this applies to the rest of the
Caribbean, so don't feel ashamed, you are not alone. Another reason not to
be ashamed, Vista supports modems and floppy's, if it didn't then that would
be another story.
