Modem not there

I have an Ambient 56 External modem. When I start my
computer and try to connect to the internet the modem
is "not available". It is not in Device manager until I
1) Scan for hardware, 2) turn the modem off and then back
on 3) Scan for hardware again. It then appears and works
OK. Any ideas? Thanks. PS I am by no means an expert user!

Let the built-in modem troubleshooter for XP help you. Start>Help and
Support>Index>modem>Troubleshooter.
