Modem Nightmare

S

SalfordFruitbat

For the past week or so, I've had a nightmare staying online.

Dialup & connect OK. I'm fine for about 10-15mins.. then the connection drops
off. Doesn't disconnect, just goes megaslow so that all pages timeout.
Right click on the DUN icon and disconnect.. but it pauses for about 5 secs
before it disconnects.

Connect again immediately... back to normal. Till about 10-15mins then itall
happens again.
Updated modem driver (Hayes PCI v92), changed the cable, tried other ISPs
(usually on Freeserve Anytime), tried with the Firewall off.. no change. The
only thing I've done to my PC in the past few weeks is add more RAM (512Meg upto
1Gb)

WindowsXP Pro Fully updated with all patches. AthlonXP2500+.

Modem log copied below.

Any ideas whats happening anyone cos it's driving me insane!!!

I take it Firewall is activated and you've scanned with a current AV app?

Yep. Norton AV & Firewall on & upto date.
Also done a Spybot & AdAware check.

Could it be a duff modem?

Recently I had the exact same problem, except the
my "online half-life" was more like 5 minutes. The
problem modem was an Intel WinComm 56kbps V.92. After
many hours of the usual do-overs and driver updates with
zero progress, I just said screw it and went over to
Radio Shack and got the same type of modem but from a
different vendor (Best Data); downloaded the latest
driver and everything was FINE -- all problems
disappeared.

fyi: I was building this PC from scratch with various
computer show products -- Asus P4P8X motherboard; 2.6GHz
Intel CPU; Intel ICH5 chipset; 120GB SATA drive; and just
the minimum application software installed (until I got
the HW to work correctly) -- I figure I just got a bogus
modem.
