Modem/Location Query

Good day all,

Just curious as I finally received a replacement Motorola Modem (2210) from
ATT & every time I call for connection issues, they ask " is the modem close
to a printer, speakers, etc.? " I say what ?! I mean, this is PC set up &
yes there are electronics around. So my question is, where else could I
place the modem ? I have a desk w/ the Drive in a cabinet under the desk,
the Ethernet cable is all of what, 3' long, so where am I supposed to put
it ? Besides PC Savvy, what am I missing here ?!

Thanks IA

Purchase a longer ethernet cable and put your modem in the cabinet under the
desk?

Thanks Tom but then it's right next to the Drive - wouldn't that cause the
same issues ? I ask as the few folks I know w/ a PC all use a Modem & they
sit right amongst all the electronics & have no issues; same at work too.

I'm assuming your talking about a DSL modem rather than a phone modem.
The support person is not crazy, as some equipment is sensitive to other
radiations from things like a monitor, especially the glass tube type.
Even with a 3 ft cable, it could be put up on the top of the desk (if
you have a bookcase hutch), or over on another table beside you. But
the question was a reasonable question. Just not right up against some
other item with a motor, fan, power supply etc. Normally you don't
need to, but when you get down to the nitty gritty, of problem solving,
move it for a bit.

Thanks very much Big_Al & I'll give that a try! Also, I read where I should
leave the Modem on - yes, DSL, sorry - for 10 days to maximize connection
speed - maybe that was part of the issues I have had, re: connecting ?
Anyway, I'll do that as well.

Thanks again & have yourself a good weekend!

Last thought, I'm not sure how a DSL modem connects up, never saw or
used one, but if it has a cable that is cheap to replace, then you might
want to try that. I know in the days of dial up modems I used to find
some phone cables were a major cause for transmission error, either the
wires or the cheap connectors on the end that went into those telco jacks.

Have fun.

Is it possible that what you are missing is a reliable Internet Service
Provider? Does your local cable television company offer internet
service? I went from a phone dial-up modem(A Telephone& Texas based
company) to a cable modem through a local cable television company and
I've never looked back. My cable modem customer support is located in
America. Maybe not much better but at least I can understand what they
say. ;-)

Just a thought if you can't get the DSL to work to your satisfaction.

Jd thanks & I am currently using ATT. I checked w/ DirecTv, but after I
entered my ph. # & street address, there are no carriers available. Yea, I
hear ya re: the language & accent.

Enjoy your weekend !

Big_Al, I did that this AM, set it up on top as best I could & am anxious to
see how this responds; hopefully this will be the end to the constant
disconnects or non start ups. Will let you know - thanks again

I see you have 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' is this new service, or a replacement modem
on old service? AT&T (since their SBC days) has required a 10-day "ramp up"
on their CO DSLAM connected customers with Express (1.5mb/.384mb) and Pro
(3.0mb/.5mb) customers. However, that is only for new service. If you've had
the service longer than 10 days, you don't need to leave it on; but it is
convenient.

As for your primary question, I'll just chime in with my 2¢ worth. In
practical terms, the modem should not be within three feet of a monitor, or
printer. More is better.

Also, the DSL modem should be connected to the wall jack using the telephone
cord which came with the modem. If necessary, better to leave the modem
within that cable's reach of a wall jack, and connect a longer run of CAT 5e
cable from the modem to the computer (or router, if you use one of those).
Worst thing to do is use one of those common, flat satin telephone cords for
a 25 foot run from the wall jack to the modem. While they are fine for voice
frequencies, such cables are RF antennas, and will pick up any RF in their
vicinity, which looks like DSL noise to the modem.

Hi Norman, You may also have helped me as I have no phone jack in the room
w/ the PC so I run a long, maybe 30' round, but one piece line from the
modem to the jack. & as it now stands, the Modem is just about 3", behind &
up from the Printer with 2 wooden shelves between & about 4-5" from the
Monitor.

With respect to the first question, it is an old service & modem, as I
wanted to try & move it before I connected the new, but same Motorola 2210.
I also rerouted the 30" cord to avoid any passage of any other electrical,
cable or phone lines.

Thanks so much & that was far more than just 2 cents worth !

So far, so good after 2 full days, but then it has gone a few days, then
crapped out, but other days it may work for 10 minutes then shut down, & not
work again for many hours, but keeping my fingers crossed!

You are not experiencing a Windows XP problem. For troubleshooting I would
recommend:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,pcb

That should take you to the AT&T West forum at DSLReports.

I'd suggest starting with the FAQ, though:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/pacbell

And lurking; looking for threads with similar problems to your own. When you
get around to asking for assistance, start your own topic.

There is also private forum available to registered users:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/sbcdirect

But you should go through the FAQ, and the public forum first, just to get
the lay of the land.

thanks but already did all those; as i mentioned in another post, or more, i
get confused w/ the usual geek speak & need laymen terms - sorry
