Modem Identification

My service provider (COX Cable) indicated I have a Toshiba Modem and BeLarc
Advisor lists a Realtek RTL 8139 Family Voice Win 1806 Modem on my machine
(XP Home Edition). However I have a Webstar modem from Scientific Atlantic.
Where can I go to list the modems and delete the ones I no longer use?

I can't explain the differentiation between all the various brands and
models, but let me explain the Toshiba "modem" Cox Cable says you
have.

A modem is a device that converts a non-digit signal to a digital
signal and vice versa. It's used on dial-up lines.

What your cable signal is starts as non-digital and ends as
non-digital, in either direction. So no modem is required or can be
used for it. Although many of us loosely call the device that connects
cable to your computer a modem, it is technically not a modem at all.

The modem that Belarc detects is a 56K dial-up modem that's installed on
your computer. Take a look at the back of your computer and see if there's a
device with two phone connectors side by side. That's what Belarc is
identifying. You can also check Device Manager (Start -> Run ->
devmgmt.msc). Expand the modem branch for more information.

Keep in mind that the Realtek modem has nothing to do with the equipment
supplied by your cable provider. It would only be used if you had dial-up
internet service through your phone lines.

I can't tell you why Cox thinks you have a Toshiba Cable modem and the box
connected to your computer is a different make and model. That's something
you're going to have to work out with them.

Good luck

As the others have noted, you have a cable company and you say you have
a Webstar modem, maybe something like this:
http://www.timewarnercable.com/centralny/customer/internet/SAWebStar.html

This is a cable modem and you need to connect it to your PC with an
Ethernet (8 wire) cat5 cable and you should have internet service.
