Modem error 633

Good morning,

We're having some problems with error 633 on the modem on
a Tecra S1 laptop. This started happening quite suddenly
a week ago. We've system restored back to sometime in
April, with no effect. I contacted MS support, who told
me to uninstall / reinstall the modem, and remove any
Palm software installed (there is none). The latest
response I have from them is pretty much "we don't know
the answer, contact Toshiba for hardware support".
Searching around the web, I don't believe this is a
hardware issue, although I shall contact Toshiba anyway.

When we query the modem we get the response "The port
that the modem is attached to could not be opened. This
may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the
device manager to verify all devices are functional."
(we've done this, they are)

The laptop is running XP Pro, and as I said, the modem
(an internal one) was working fine until a week ago.

Apologies if this is the wrong group, but this is
beginning to get frustrating!

Many thanks for any advice

You don't actually say whether you reinstalled the modem's driver.
I thought that would be pretty obvious, but yes, I
reinstalled the modem's driver.

I have the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite laptop and I have also reloaded the modem driver sw, searched for 'telephon.ini' and 'tapiini.exe' both were NOT found. When I initiate the dial up it immediately goes to the error 633 wdo, whether or not the phone cable is plugged into the RJ-11 socket. That clue seems to make me think the problem is conflicts but not with COM 3 but with the IRQ positions. I looked at them and three USB controllers, two Ti cardbus controllers, graphics card, and the modem are all assigned to IRQ 9.
I think I need to change the modem IRQ to another position, but need instruction on how to do this. Comments?

Hey Guys,

I've been checking quite a few forums and realized that I was far from
being the
only one to have this "modem error 633" on my Toshiba laptop internal
modem. (Tosh. Satellite M30 centrino 1,5, winXP home, 6month old).
After having tried all the solutions that were suggested like remove
my palm softwares, re-install modem drivers, search for telephone.ini
file wich doesn't exist on XP, system restored on XP, and finally
reinstall the whole system, I arrive to the conclusion that there was
definitely a hardware problem...I decided my modem was fried.
I then brought back the laptop to the shop (warranty), and they agreed
on saying it was fried and said they will change the modem. the laptop
is still with them now.
Unfortunately, since that I got a comment saying that this was
probably a VB virus, comming via MS outlook.
If this can help you guys, check that, and try it before to change the
modem...I'm quite convinced that this was the solution. unfortunately
it's too late for me to try...
but still, I'm wondering what the background reason is so that Tosh
laptop have this problem so often....

"Hi Franck, First make sure Outlook is not running in the back
ground, if
it is you more than likely have a VB virus, look for these file names:
-email.txt and -emailinfo.txt. ,WINL0G0N.EXE [O-Zero] if found search
the reg. for
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\WINL0G0N.EXE="
c:\windows\WINL0G0N.EXE"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\WINL0G0N.EXE=
"c:\windows\WINL0G0N.EXE"
then try this: Error 602/633/651/665/722/777/797: Port or Modem error
end task on rnaapp
Reboot the system
add atz to init string reboot remove atz string
Also remember that you must remove the strings from the reg after you
uninstall the drivers This is a MUST for any USB device.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum check ControlSet002 also.
After deleting all ref's search
the reg for the name of your hw/driver using edit "findnext" I took
me a
long time to find all ref's to an USB modem,
One last thing, have you added a printer lately? If so remove all
ref's
to it also before reinstalling the modem.
Lots of luck
Bill"

or check that discussion thread on ITtoolbox.com :

See u guys, and good luck. I'll keep u updated when I'll get my laptop
back from the shop...
