modem disconnects and phone rings

Hi

I have a strange problem. Recently at random the my internet connection will
disconnect and the phone will ring one time. Checking the phone I find no
one on the phone.

The machine is running XP home sp1 with a dial up modem. Also noted the
phone is not connected to the computer nor is there any call waiting, or
call notification features connected.

You may have a problem with your phone-lines. Contact your phone company and
request a point-to-point data test (it can't be done over the phone, they'll
have to send someone out).

Hello;
Do you have a PcTel modem? Seems to be a bad habit with them. I suggest
you get a new modem to solve the trouble.
