I want my internet connection to disconnect for incoming calls

I actually want my internet connection to disconnect for
an incoming call, but it won't. Obviously I have a dial-
up connection. I recently bought a new computer with
Windows XP Home. I have not disabled call waiting, but
incoming calls still do not sever the internet
connection. When I am online and an incoming call comes
in, I have no indication that there is an incoming call.
The caller does not receive a busy signal, the phone just
rings and rings until they get disgusted and hang up. I
have looked at line switching devices (such as ComSwitch)
and internet caller id programs, but really just want
Windows XP to do what earlier Windows programs did - hang
up when a new call comes in. Any suggestions?

Most modems now have modem on hold capabilities . This function will put the
internet connection on hold and give you a message that you have a incoming
call. You need to have call waiting for this to work. Go into modem
properties and turn it on . If no success go to the modem manufactures
website for instructions. Jym
