Modem disconnecting broadband

Have a server and 3 pc's setup with broadband through a router. Have one of
the pcs dialling up to an online bank via a dialup modem. The modem shares
the same line as a fax machine.

Until yesterday everything worked fine. The Internet via broadband would
always be on even when dialling the bank.

Now the modem tries to dial the bank and fails. The modem diagnostics show
no problems. The fax machine works fine however when dialling the bank the
fax machine now lights up and the broadband connection is dropped - for the
server and pcs.

Have run spyware and virus programs - no errors. In the morning will swap
the modem, and check the telephone line (even though the fax works fine).

All bank dialup settings have been checked with the bank - they suggest a
modem or phone problem - all equipment is a few months old.

No new software has been installed, Internet explorer settings are set to
never dial a connection.

This is very wierd. Any Ideas?

Using hyper terminal to connect to the telephone number results in no
carrier detected.

Hope this helps

In order to "share" one phone line with broadband (DSL) and fax/modem
(analog), you need to have a DSL filter place on the analog side. So here
is a sample setup:

Wall Jack ------- Phone Y spilter ----- Boardband DSL unit
|
\---------- DSL
ilter ------- fax machine -------- modem (connected to AUX/external

phone
jack on fax)

If you had it working before, the DSL filter may be busted/not working.
