modem-dialup-problem 720

H

Harald ARNOLD

Since a longer period of time a have a problem dailing in from my computer
to internet. I am using more than one modem connected to my computer and
three differnt MS operating systems. On ALL other systems ALL modems
are working fine and connect to internet.

My problem at Win2K is: When I connect to internet it all seems like
normal till the point that my computer will be registered in internet.
Then the connection will be lost with error code 720 (all messages
are retrunslated to english by me):

- modem-dialup-tone
- user and passworf will be checked
- computer will be registered to network

And noe connection will be lost with error code 720:

Error 720: Trying to connect had an error, because no
PPP-control-protokols between this and the remote
computer can being exchanged.

*** Original message in german ***
Fehler 720: Der Verbindungsversuch ist fehlgeschlagen, da keine
PPP-Steuerungsprotokolle zwischen diesem und dem
Remotecomputer ausgetauscht werden können.
***

Thanks for your help, Harald

I now have the same problem as Harald Arnold, but I have Windows XP SP2.
Perhaps Harald would like to see KB810979, which says that it is app;icable
to Windows 2000 Professional.
I would like to apply that Article to my problem, but it is probably
dangerous to apply the solution for one OS to another and Resolutin Step 1 is
to "Uninstall the TCP/IP protocol" and I cannot see how to do that in Windows
XP SP2 - the Uninstall Button is greyed out.
Does anyone know how to persuade MS to produce a new KB on this topic?

How to reset TCP/IP in Windows XP
When viewing the list of components for a network interface, you may notice that the Uninstall button is grayed out when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected. You can’t uninstall TCP/IP on Windows XP because the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system. In a case, you have a problem with TCP/IP settings, you can use netsh utility to reset the TCP/IP stack.

To reset TCP/IP, do this: netsh int ip reset [log_file_name], for example, netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt.

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.
