Modem dials for no apparent reason

I have a wireless network, 1 PC using XP SP2 another running ME, this one is
the print and dial in server, and finally a Mac G3on OS9. I have the modem
set for auto dial so that I do not have to leave my living room if I suddenly
need to look up a topic on the Web.
There is however one annoying glitch, the modem will fire up even if there
are no Apps running on any machine. This leads me to believe there is
something else doing it such as an auto update process. I would appreciate
input on anything that could be doing these rather than waiting for me to be
online before checking whatever it is programmed to. I have tried turning off
modem auto dial without any luck. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

Clive

Clive,

To find out what program is making the modem dial, get Port Explorer (free) from
<http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home> to show you what
network connections your computer is actually opening, and what processes are
opening them. Then to find out about any interesting process, get Process
Explorer (free) from <http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>.
Provides way more information than Task Manager.
