modem / device manager

help! I am unable to connect to the internet using the internal 56k modem on
my dial up account. I looked in device manager - the modem is NOT listed. I
am using Windows XP home. When I look in "Network and Internet
connections">set up or change internet connection>connections and look at
settings>properties>general it says "modem removed" and shows a little red
cross.
When I switch to classic view and look in "phone and modem options">modems
it lists my modem (under "modems" ) but under "attached to" it says "not
present". The "add" and "remove" buttons are available but the "properties"
button is greyed out. Anyone got any ideas what's wrong with it? The modem is
a PCI modem and is installed correctly inside the tower.

Is this a new installation? Did old modem die?
Did you use install CD?
Did you try install hardware wizard?
Remove Modem from "phone and modem options".
reboot computer and see if new hardware found wixard starts.

not a new installation - it's the modem i have used before. when i switched
to braodband i started using an external usb modem. now that i want to use
dial up again i find that the modem i usewd to use (the one in question)
doesn't seem to be recognised by windows. i tried install hardware wizard -
says no new hardware found. i will try "remove..." and see what happens when
i reboot. will let you know outcome. thanks.
