I am having trouble connecting to the internet as of 2
days ago with my other computer which is a hewlett
packard. I called up AOL and they said the problem was
most likely me needing to reinstall my dial-up networking
files. They said to call HP, but my computer isnt under
warrenty any longer so i doubt they would help me for
free. Can anyone assist me in reinstalling the dialup
networking files?

Most of the time when a Windows machine can no longer connect to the
Internet it is due to spyware and other malware on the computer.
First,do the normal troubleshooting:

Scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier
than 2002 and using updated virus definitions). Then remove spyware
with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware
from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before
running them. These programs are free, so run them both since they
complement each other. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode. You may also need to run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html . Please read the
instructions carefully.

If that doesn't help, check that the flat phone cable is securely in
your modem and in the wall jack. Try a different phone cable. Test your
modem with Hyperterminal (dial a phone number different from the one
you use to connect, obviously, like a cell phone or second number).
Finally, you cannot uninstall TCP/IP in XP, but you can use the
NetShell(netsh) utility to reset TCP/IP. When command is executed, it
rewrites registry keys that are used by the TCP/IP stack.

Here is a link to the MS Knowledge Base article. Note that the url wraps
in my newsreader and you'll need to enter it into your browser's
addressbar on one line:

default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q299357&ID=KB;EN-US;Q299357

But do try the cleanup first.

Alright, thanks, but if none of this works what is my
next step to fix the problem?

Don't panic about your computer, if you can connect to any
part of the Internet. For the past week the Internet has
been hosed.

Don't do "what if" until you've done the troubleshooting. Waste of
energy to worry about "what if".
