Yet another issue without hints from Microsoft:

OS is 64 bit Home Premium OEM

Opened Computer Management->Disk Management(local)

In the right pane where it says "Actions", I selected

Disk Management(local)
More Actions
Help

A popup titled "Disk Management Extension" announced that "MMC has
detected an error in a snap-in."

I selected "shut down MMC", got a popup announcing that "Microsoft
Management Console has stopped working".

The error details were:

Problem Event Name Appcrash
App Name mmc.exe
App Ver. 6.06000.16386
App Timestamp 4549b8be
Fault Module Name dmdskmgr.dll
Fault Module Version 6.0.6000.16386
Exception Code c0000005
Exception Offset 000000000002c025
OS version 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID 1033
LCID 1033

A web search pointed only to a Win2kx problem with a snap-in not being
compatible with MMC ver. 3.0,

I was trying to find out if Vista would let me change the partition
size on the fly. Ubuntu 2007 wouldn't let me, and Freespire blew up
during installation.

I seem to recall that Suse 6.3 did, but that was with a fat32
partition. Anyway, it doesn't recognize the 250gb drive.

It would be a shame to blow away the failed first installation before
a proper autopsy is completed.
