MM question on audio

CooHead

Hi there.
I just got a new camera that takes video and audio.
I can download the clip in from the camera to my laptop, via the software
that came with the camera (photo fun studio). I can play and watch and hear
the clip fine there. It is saved as a .MOV
When I try to bring it into MovieMaker, it says "cannot import that style
file." So, I go into my documents and change the name as a .mpg or .avi or
..m1v file. MM then lets me bring it into MM to edit.
Problem is: the audio is now for the most part quiet, with sections of
screeching.
So...what am I doing wrong? What should be changed? Please keep it simple
as I'm not so good with these computers and all.

Thanks

To answer both of your back-to-back questions. WMM does not like to import
..mov or .mpg files. You can not just change the extension on a file and
change it's file type. You need to convert the .mov file to either a proper
..avi or .wmv file to import into WMM.

See PapaJohn's great website dedicated to all things "Windows Movie Maker".

Read through the sections on importing and converting video files.

Movie clips in the QuickTime .mov format
are not compatible with Movie Maker and
simply changing the extension does not
change the format of the clip.

You need special software to convert the
file to a different format.

Here's some info on converting QuickTime
..mov files:

QuickTime Pro can convert the files.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/
(this would be the retail version not the
free one)

SUPER © Simplified
Universal Player Encoder & Renderer
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER_1
(the mirror download site is faster)

Convert .mov using TMPGEnc
and the TMPGEnc Mov Plugin

More info:

Movie Maker 2 - Converting
MOV Files

MOV to AVI Conversion Guide
http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/mov2avi.html

Free online converter:
MediaConvert
http://media-convert.com/

Using MediaConvert site:

In the File field...browse to and select
the .mp3 you wish to convert.

In the Output format field...select ...
WAVE form audio format (.wav)

Click the OK button.

Wait for the conversion to complete.

If you see a "Conversion Option" screen
that shows...Encoding, Sample Rate,
Channels...etc....just click the 'OK' button.

When you see the Download button
with the Green arrow...left click it...
choose...Save...

On the Save As screen...choose a
save location (Desktop would be a
good choice)

Click the Save button.

Good luck

Thank You so much for taking a minute to help me.
I, obviously, know very little about computers.
(I thought I was so smart in just changing the name of the file :) ).
I will read and learn more about how to properly convert the .MOV files to a
format that works well with MovieMaker.
Thanks again.

Just so you are aware .... Changing the file "name" (everything before the .
(dot) is fine. Where you will get into trouble is when you change the file
"extension" (everything *after* the . (dot). In other words;

Changing 'Movie.wmv' to 'Vacation2008.wmv' is fine.

Changing 'Movie.wmv' to 'Vacation2008.mpg' is not. Which is why Windows
(should have) warned you by asking if you were SURE you wanted to do what
you did before you did it. :)
I will read and learn more about how to properly convert the .MOV
files to a format that works well with MovieMaker.

Google "convert .mov to .wmv" for starters.

Best of luck.
