Picture black after importing to MM

After I import a MP4 clip into MM, the preview is black yet the audio plays
and the progress bar scrolls like it playing. When I drag the clip to the
video time line I can see the image. I also can hear the audio.
If anyone knows what I need to do your help would be greatly appreciated.

That would be the typical result of trying to import an MPEG video clip into
Movie Maker.
MPEG Type 1 files will "sometimes" work but other than that they are not
compatible.
Convert them to WMV or AVI and import that into Movie Maker.
