Hello,

Hope it is O.K to post this here.
I'm about to change my network configuration due to getting DSL.
Is it possible to have Static IP's and DHCP on a home network?

This is what I would like to achieve:

DSL Router (192.168.1.1 DHCP "ON" set at 192.168.1.200 offer 3 addresses)
3Com WAP (192.168.1.254 DHCP is set "Off" and plugged into DSL Router)

PC 1 plugged directly into DSL Router fixed IP: 192.168.1.10
PC 2 Wireless link fixed IP: 192.168.1.11
PC 3 Wireless link fixed IP: 192.168.1.12
PC 4 Wireless link fixed IP: 192.168.1.13

I will also connect with Wireless with 2 laptops, and PDA set with DHCP
Hopefully they will pick up 1 off the 3 addresses from the DHCP on the Router.

Will this work with Fixed and DHCP or is one or the other not mixed??
PC's are XP Home & Pro, PDA is CE2002

Many Thanks - David @ UK

That is exactly what I do, ie. my XP desktops use static IP addressing and wireless or
wired/wireless guest devices including my iPAQ 5555 use DHCP assigned IP addresses. In my case my
Buffalo WBR-G54 DHCP server assigns IP addresses to wired/wireless clients...

Hi Al,

Many thanks..
I wasn't so sure if it would work the way I wanted.
Mainly would the Wireless clients with fixed IP's still
connect back to the router via a separate AP.

I will give it a go.. Thanks again.. David

Sure. I used to run a Linksys BEFSR41 4-port broadband router and an ORiNOCO RG-1000 wireless access
point. I simply setup the RG-1000 so its built-in DHCP server was off and its NAT function was off,
ie. it served as a bridge between the wireless and wired networks. In that case the Linksys router
DHCP server supplied addresses to my wireless clients and wired guest clients.
