Missing volume control

I am attempting to recover the ability to access the
volume control in a Dell Dimension 4400 P-4 machine
running WinXP (Home). A while ago, in response to a
message under the above subject I was advised to reinstall
the sound card drivers by removing them in Device
Manager. In Device Manager, I found 6 items listed
under "Sounds, video and game controllers". The only one
that gives an uninstall option is SoundMax Integrated
Digital Audio. I have uninstalled it and rebooted,
installed an updated driver from Dell from Analog Devices
(the source of my original driver). The sound works, but
I am still unable to access a volume control from Control
Panel, or to restore an icon to the taskbar.
The other 5 items listed under "Sounds, video and game
controllers" have properties windows which permit me to
remove the driver file by file but issue a warning that my
computer may not work properly. Do I need to disregard
the warning and remove the individual files in each of the
other 5 items under "Sounds, video and game controllers"?
