missing user names at bootup

I have a PC that experienced some problems - would boot partway, then got a
very quick error message (that I couldn't read), then back to mfr. splash
screen, would just cycle through that process over and over. I booted from
CD, and tried to do the straight up repair when booting from CD (instead of
going to setup). Unfortunately, my friend who owns the PC can't remember the
admin password which it prompts me for. So, then selected setup from the CD
boot, and when prompted told it to attempt to repair the existing
installation. The repair looked OK, no errors or anything like that.

Now, when it boots, it goes to the screen for you to click on your user name
- but there are no user names there!?!?! I have tried safe mode, same thing,
and ditto for safe mode with command prompt. I just attempted to go through
the repair steps again, no luck.

Any suggestions? I wanted to see if there were any other thoughts before I
do a setup fresh install and see if that works. I am *hoping* to keep her
data and everything.

Thanks in advance, appreciate any advice! BH

Acutally, just remembered that there was a message on the repair:

COM+ Setup Error

Sub-component COM+ raised an exception while processing the
OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION setup message.
d:\nt\com1x\src\complussetup\comsetup\ccompluscatalogsetup.cpp (line 472)

Error Code = 0x80070002

The system cannot find the file specified.

Currently there is no help for this error message. Please see
systemroot\comsetup.log for more details.

THANKS!!! BH
