Missing USB Composite Driver

I just hooked up a new Epson RX620 printer to my PC. I ran into trouble with
the installation and contacted Epson. They told me to find the device in the
Device Manager and update the driver.

When the Hardware Wizard appeared, I was told to Install from a specific
location and then use the Don't search option. The next screen was supposed
to show me a USB composite device to update the driver. This device did not
show up though.

I went back and retried the update by automatically looking for the driver -
no luck.

Before I give up and do a Windows Repair/Reinstall (or return the #$%*
printer), any ideas where this driver could be hiding?

Did you install the software that came on the CD with the printer BEFORE
connecting the printer to the PC?

Yes, I did. I connected the printer when the software told me to. Then a
hardware device window opened. I just cancelled it to let the software finish
installing.

It may have wanted further information, and without that it could not
installed correctly. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling.

Well, now it gets worse...

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. Plus, now I
can not get ANY USB items to be recognized, even ones that worked before the
printer problem.

I tried to get around this by uninstalling the USB controllers, rebooting,
and letting the computer find the right drivers. The reinstalled the USB
controller drivers, but not the "root hub" drivers. It says they can not be
found. BTW I ran Dell's diagnostics on the USB ports and they all checked out
okay.

Any other thoughts? Now I am really leaning toward reinstalling Windows XP
and starting from scratch. Can you reinstall Windows without erasing all of
the other data on the hard drive?

Yes, you can... however I would backup what I termed essential files
(documents, videos, MP3s etc) just in case.

Don't forget to reinstall SP2 afterwards... SP2 includes all of SP1 so you
don't have to do both! Easiest way is to download a copy of the 'network
installation' which is the complete package and burn it to a CD, then you
can install it before connecting to the internet.
