When I launch Windows Explorer from my shortcut the little "expand"
symbol (a plus sign in a square) which should be just to the left of
the Program Files folder is missing.

I have tried using both these commands in Properties > Shortcut >
Target of my shortcut:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,/n, "C:\Program Files"
"C:\Program Files"

Just a quick question...When you click on Program Files in the left pane - do
the icons for the folders show up in the right pane?

I ask because the folder may be empty - and therefore there may be nothing
to expand. Could be that someone has hosed your system!

If not, there are other steps to troubleshoot the problem.

Oh no, don't worry, there are plenty of program folders in my Program
Files! Thanks for the safety check though! :-)
