For some reason the images that appear on my thumbnails and folders letting
me know which picture file is which have dissapeared. Only a Kodak icon is
displayed. Not sure if this is connected to the problem but my 'Windows
picture and fax viewer' and 'slideshow' are not working either.

So the first link didn't work for me. I typed "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" into run
and I got a message box saying "The module shimgvw.dll" was loaded but the
entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "shimgvw.dll" is
a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again."

As for the other link, I don't have a "refresh thumbnail" option when I
right click my images.

Also, my movies no longer have previews for them as well.

Jason,

It looks like the module shimgvw.dll is corrupt. You should be able to fix the problem by deleting the existing shimgvw.dll from your Windows\System32 folder, and let Windows issues a fresh copy from the DllCache folder automatically.

If that does not work for you, you may have to expand a fresh copy from the source.
