Missing taskmgr tray icon

Hi.

I am running XP SP2. When I start the task manager I don't get the little
green square icon in the tray most of the times. I stop and restart it,
and about after 10 or 15 tries I succeed to get the icon. Once it's there
it remains visible (also when I minimize the taskmgr window).
It makes no difference how I start taskmgr (Ctrl-Alt-Del or klicking a
shortcut to taskmgr.exe or right klick in the taskbar, then select
"task manager").

I experience the same thing on an brand new machine with a fresh XP SP2
installation.

Any idea ?

Greetings

That icon will only stay there until the Task Manager is open. This behavior you cannot change

Wrong. The icon show that the task manager is running, and it is (or
should be)
there as soon as the task manager is running; I can double click it, and
the task manager window shows up, but the icon remains in the tray !
That's the default behaviour (also in NT and 2000)

I am willing to bet you are using the Classic Start menu? I have the exact
same problem and have looked and looked for a solution to this. All I have
been able to discover is that it appears to be related to this setting.
Apparently Microsoft is aware of this issue but to date there hasn't been a
solution.

Although you are right with your guess (I am using classic start menu)
there
is nothing better if I use XP style; still the same problem. (Well, maybe I
had to try only 5 times instead of 10, but still most of the time I don't
get the tray icon).

Not in 2000 and not in XP or Windows 2003. Try not using classic mode

You are right that I am using classic mode, but unfortunately I have very
much the same problem with XP style.
