Missing SYSTEM file

I am currently in the Recovery console following the steps in article 307545
to restore the SYSTEM file in c:\windows\system32\config directory. However,
the "original" SYSTEM file that should be located in c:\windows\repair is not
there! Is there another location that holds a SYSTEM file that I can use?
What about the SYSTEM.SAV file? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Margrit is saying "the "original" SYSTEM file that should be located in
c:\windows\repair is not there"!

In this situation will a Windows XP Repair Install succeed?

It should. A repair install replaces all system files but keeps
settings, programs and user data intact. Service packs and patches will
have to be re-installed, though. Read the link Carey gave, it explains
it pretty good.

Doesn't it also commits the user to reinstalling SP2 (also possibly SP1)
and all updates since SP2?

Yes (but SPs are cumlative, i.e. SP2 includes SP1). I thought I
indicated that. Did you read the article Carey gave the link to? I
suggest you do so, it's very good.
