System file missing

I am currently in the Recovery console because of a corrupt registry and
following the steps for recovering from the situation. However, I am unable
to copy the SYSTEM file because there is none in c:\windows\repair. It's
missing!! Can anyone suggest what I should do next?

Instead of restoring your registry files from the Repair directory, you
could restore them directly from the System Volume folder - see here:

The instructions you refer me to are exactly the ones I'm trying to follow.
The proble comes up inPart 1, section 5, when I try to copy SYSTEM from the
repair folder. Can you guide me to te System Volume?

I'm s little desperate right now, so it's great to hear from you.

The overall steps go like this. You need to perform all of them while in the
Recovery Console.
1. Save the current registry files in a safe place.
2. Copy the System Restore registry files to a temp folder.
3. Rename them.
4. Copy them to the c:\windows\system32\config folder.

Step 2 above is described as "Part 3", in particular these items:
10. From the Snapshot folder, copy the following files to the C:\Windows\Tmp
folder:
a..
a.. _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
b.. _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
c.. _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
d.. _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
e.. _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
Step 3 is described here:
11. Rename the files in the C:\Windows\Tmp folder as follows:
a.. Rename _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT to DEFAULT
b.. Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY to SECURITY
c.. Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE
d.. Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to SYSTEM
e.. Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM to SAM
Post again if any of this is unclear.

Thanks again for your help. Csn you tell me where to find the Snapshot
folder? All I'm really looking for is the System file since it is missing
from the Repair folder. Csn I use the backup system file I created in the
first part of section 5?

It's a subfolder of the System Volume Information folder. On my machine the
path is:
C:\System Volume
Information\_restore{14157744-4FA2-4CAF-BAFB-72CC49941087}\RP449\snapshot

No, you aren't looking for just the System file, you need the set of
registry files.

This step is detailed in Part 2.

I suggest that you stop and read the directions all the way through to
understand the whole process. You can then adapt it to your circumstance.

I will now be off the air for some 9 hours. Good luck!

If the file is not available to copy, you've little choiice but to
reinstall the OS. You might try doing a Repair Installation first, though.

After working some more on this problem, I finally decided to give up and
reinstall Windows. I had a backup of most of my files and access to most of
my programs, so it seemed to me that a clean install could be a safer
approach than continuing with the process undertaken by using the recovery
console. After the reinstall, everything is fine except that it will still
take me a while to install all the programs and tweak the settings until they
are the way I like them.

I want to thank you for help as I tried to work my way through the recovery
process. I learned a lot from you and from the othr posters. Your prompt,
thorough replies were both a help and a consolation.

Please see my reponse to Pegasus. Although I eventually decided to reinstall
Windows, the issue really was the System file which was necessary as I worked
my way through the process that is detailed on the Microsoft site. But it's a
moot issue now. Thanks for your interest and your help.

So I did reinstall Windows and am happy I did since there were probobably
nuermous problems affecting the computer. It's was a bit of a pain, but much
less than what I had already gone through.

Thanks for your advice.

Thanks for the feedback. To protect yourself against similar mishaps you
might want to create an image of your installation, e.g. with Acronis
TrueImage.
