xp home repair- complicated

this is a little involved but hopefully something is possible
after an incomplete repair, there were display dlls's that i didn't have at
the time,
when i attempt to start/restart the repair in progress it again i get the
corrupt system file message
C:\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt
i have run a chkdsk /r and tried numerous restarts on the repair, sometimes
it starts, sometimes
it doesn't recognize the windows install. in the config folder i had saved
the original repair system and system.sav
when it doesn't recognize the existing install or gives the corrupt system
msg, if i copy the saved system
over the current one in config, i can get back to recognzing the install and
starting a repair again or continuing
with an incomplete repair, still with me here?
(and one big question here: is the system file in the config folder, the
actual registry, that is on disk until it is loaded?)
i don't think i can get past my current state, however my main question, i
have the system file, in the
repair folder, if that is from the original install and if i replace the
current system with it, and it actually boots windows,
i have a system as of 4 years ago from the original install?, which is
something but after 4 years of program installs etc
kinda useless. but will that somehow allow me to patch the problem system
file that i have in config?
or better yet, i have a saved registry file, that i made from the regedit
export that would be current enough. is there some way to
use that saved registry to replace the problem system file?
note when i say system file i mean c:/windows/system32/config/system (with
no extension)

thanks for the replies, memory checks out ok and disk checks as well
i have a full copy of the disk on another disk
i have checkd out the 307545 and 822705, they don't help much here, but have
some
great info for saving restore points for the future
my problem is that i don't have any restore points for a registry other than
the original install,
(there should have been some but thats water over the dam now)
which is 4 years old and not much good for all the installed programs. i
have seen some vague posts
about repairing a bad system file. but nothing about being able to use an
exported registry from
regedit. at this point that would seem to be my only chance of restoring an
up to date registry
