Missing sidebar in My Computer folder view

I am missing the sidebar (I'm not sure if this is what it's called) to the
left of "My Computer". Where you had choices of the following categories:
Files Stored on This Computer
Hard Disk Drives
Devices with Removable Storage
etc, etc, etc......................
When you opened a folder it told you things on the left like:
Size of the folder
Gave you the choice of highlighting (let's say songs or photos) within the
folder and on the left you would have a choice of burning the songs or photos
onto a CD/DVD

How can I restore this view? I hope that someone will understand what I'm
trying to describe? Sorry for being so vague because I have no idea what the
proper term is for that area on the left hand side of the window is called.

See if this helps.

Click on the Tools menu at the top of the My Computer window.
Click on Folder Options.
On the General page, make sure "Show common tasks in folders" is checked.
Click OK.

This should restore the Common Tasks pane to the left hand side of the Window.
