missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys

my second computer decided to spit out this error:

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys

now microsoft tells me that it is caused by changing the
hard disk to NTFS system.. (didn't do that).

they tell me to fix the problem all i have to do is put in
my windows cd and hit "r" on the "Welcome to Setup"
screen.. problem being.. The ntfs.sys error prevents me
from getting to that screen, so I can't hit "r".

thus far the only things i can think of are trying to get
it to boot up in dos (hasn't happened yet) and replace the
file.. or scrap the HD, and start over (not a good option).

Need all the help i can get.

TIA.

XP is not able to boot up in DOS. If you need a DOS
boot disk go to bootdisk.com it's not likely to be
helpful with xp/ntfs

You have to enter the computer bios and change the
boot setting so that the cdrom is the first choice.
Only then will it actually boot from the cdrom
and enable you to do a repair.

This is the procedure to follow when you actually get to
the recovery console (after booting from the cdrom)

can no one read??

the cd does boot up.. it starts running but is stopped by
the same error that prevents the computer from booting up
on it's own. therefore I can't run the fix.

What progress messages from the CD boot *do* you get?
Do you get a message about starting windows setup, etc, etc?

DO you have the XP retail disk (or similar)
