missing or corrupt file,reinstallation

I received a message"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrup
windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.ex
Please reinstall a copy of the above file

How can I get a copy of this file and when I do how do I reinstall it when I can't open windows even using safe mode
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Did you try the "last known good configuration" option on

the screen with safe mode? Or best fix is a repair type re-
install of XP.
