unable to configure Linksys card -- their tech said I
need to contact MS because I am missing Wireless Zero
Configuration utlity....I tried reinstalling XP pro again
and checking for latest updates, but it still does not
appear under the "Services" tab on my machine.

run regedit and find

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WZCSVC

add a DWORD entry named "Start" and
value "2"

Found the WZCSCV file, but not sure how to add a DWord
entry names Start with value 2

edit, new, dword value.
if you are not familiar with the registry editor, you might want to
get a more experienced friend to assist you.

I have a similar problem, need the WZCSVC service, but in Regedit, there is no entry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WZCSVC

Can I just add it, with the DWORD value?

I've never tried it, but I'll bet you could right click on
\windows\inf\netwzc.inf and select install.

And reboot.

In Regedit, I did not have an entry for the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WZCSVC, so I added an entry to the registry and added the DWORD entry Start with a value = 2. I rebooted and I still did not have a service entry for WZC in Computer Management. Ken Wickes (above) suggested installing \windows\inf\netwzc.inf and rebooting, which I also tried and I still cannot seem to get an entry for the WZC service.

I am running Win2000 Professional, SP4 (to my understanding, at least SP3 is required to get WZCSVC to load). I need WZCSVC because our wireless environment requires digital certification which I undertand will not work without the WZC service. The only thing I can assume is that there is something that is prohibiting the WZC service from loading.

Any ideas?

If the service was gone, then adding the Start DWORD is certainly not
enough, that's why I had hoped the installing netwzc.inf would do the trick.

Just to make sure, type "sc qc wzcsvc" at a command prompt and post the
results.

the advice and fix is for Windows XP. This is a WindowsXP newsgroup,
not a windows 2000 newsgroup. There is not Wireless Zero Configuration
GUI on W2K.

Greetings rgarfinkel,

If the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility isn't listed in the Services,
then click Start, Run, and type "regedit".

Find the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WZCSVC

Then add a DWORD entry named "Start" and value "2"

Can you please repeat the instructions for getting the missing wireless
zero config utility in Windows XP?
I had a wireless network running on Windows XP with 128 WEP on a Dell
Inspiron 8500 with a TrueMobile 1300 WLAN mini-PCI. It worked until
yesterday. The Dell tech tried reinstalling the drivers and running the
Windows XP repair. Nothing helped. I also do not have the wireless zero
config listed. Why is it happening to so many people in the last few weeks.
I have Windows XP with sp1 and have downloaded all the critical updates
since getting the computer in June.
