Missing Login Icon

Cliff

Hi, I wonder if someone can help me. I seem to be locked
out of my laptop. I'm running win XP and I only had one
user account set up (an admin account) with a password.
When I boot the laptop I get the login screen but no icon
to click on to begin the login. Has anyone ever seen
this or know how to get around it? Thanks, Cliff

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome screen, and you'll get the old Win2K
style logon. Enter your username and password there. Then go to Control
Panel, User Accounts, and make sure the account shows up there. If not, then
click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Right click in the right pane and select New, DWord value. Give the value
the same name as the missing user account. Double click the value you just
created and set it to 1.

.you might try putting the original installation CD in
before booting and install XP again. it will install over
the top of the earlier version and repair it.

For what it's worth, my laptop has done this to me twice! The latest happened today! <grrr> HP with XP Pro. The logon screen will have NO accounts to click. The only way I have been able to get past it is to re-install XP. This is not acceptable to me. If anyone has an alternate solution, I'd like to hear it.
I tried to do the Ctrl Alt Del and type in my password and user name, but it didn't take that, either.

my laptop has done the same. i have a compaq presario
with windows xp pro. it is showing the login screen with
out any applets to loging to. i tried hitting 'f8' and
reverting to the last known good configuration. that
didnt work. i also tried booting from the windows xp
boot disk and have that repair the computer. still ( and
hour and a half later) nothing. one thing that i can do
is get the computer to boot (from the windows xp pro
disk) to a DOS prompt. from there i tried running a
chkdsk. and that didnt work. if anyone has any ideas as
to how i can save my computer from DOS prompt or other
wise with out completely formatting my computer PLEASE
HELP! thanks for your time
