Missing files

I have a problem with iTunes/Quicktime and my iPod. When I plug my iPod in I
get an error message saying that C\windows\system32\dsound.dll is not a valid
windows image. Also destop messenger wont start. Searched thru the posting
here and found on saying how to check for missing files by insterting my XP
cd, cancelling the installing screen then going to Start/run and typing SFC
/SCANNOW. My pc goes thru the motions then asks me to insert my Windows Xp
professional disc, because it needs to copy items from the DLL cahce (seems
right to me) but I dont have this disc, never have, I have XP home edition.
Whats going wrong?

Looks like it is trying to open a graphic (image) file and a DLL (Dynamic
Link Library) is not a graphic. A file association error. If you know the
graphic it is trying to open, go to the below website for association fix.

Hi Tony,

sfc /scannow is looking for the \i386 sub-directory. You need to
point the following to registry keys to the drive that contains that
directory.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath:REG_SZ:<drive
letter>:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath:REG_SZ:<drive
letter>:

One of the things that confused me was that I wanted to point
directly at the directory. That is not correct, you want to point to
the drive since most manufacturers put the i386 directory directly
off of the root directory.

Hi Joseph,

First of all thanks very much for replying, its really appreciated, but not
being a real computer whiz is there any chance you could explain to me step
by step what I need to do?

Thanks again

Hi Tony,

Basically, you need to run RegEdit. To do that, do [Start] > [Run]
type 'regedit' click [OK].

When the regedit window appears, navigate through the keys in the
left-hand pain to the specified keys and then double click on the
value that needs to change. Type in the correct value in the window
that pops up and hit [Enter].

Hi Joseph.

Thanks for that. OK, did that and then did the SFC scan thing again and
this time it went thru the motions and gave me no feed back what so ever.
Marvellous I thought. NOT!

Restarted my PC (which is in danger of going out of my very huigh window
soon) and same thing happened, same error messages etc.

So, thought to hell with all these problems, re-format the HD (after saving
all my stuff, am not that silly) but when I inserted my XP disk, a message
appears saying the version on the CD is older than the PC therefore cant do
anything about it sorry pal!!!

Any idea what do do in this situation????

Hi Tony,

You new problem is that you have installed a service pack and the
disk that you are installing from does not have that service pack.

You have a couple of possibilities at this point.

1) Slipstream your existing CD with the service back and do a
'repair' install.

2) Do a clean install. DO a boot of the CD and tell it you want to
install windows. Have it re-partition the disk and install to the
newly created partition.

I am glad you were able to backup all of your data!

BTW, it is 'C.Joseph' NOT 'Joseph'. There is no space between the
'.' and the 'J'. My given name is actually 'C.Joseph'.
