Missing files/icons

Suddenly my recycle bin window no longer shows files or icons in the frame. I know there is something there because when I click on empty it ask if I want to delete a certain number of files from the recycle bin

I have the same problem with the "my computer" folder. When opened I get the frame but no files or icons. The control panel was doing the same but for some reason the icons have reappeared. I can't figure out what I did to make them return

Can anyone suggest a solution, short of reinstalling XP

No, I have not had a reply to my question. I'm beginning to have questions about the validity of this forum. Righ now I would settle for an email address to MS where one could reach someone that has answers. I am beginning to understand the frustration many people have with MS and their products.
