Hope someone can help,

My son runs windowsxp professional service pack 2.

Just lately, when he turns on his pc lt starts up as normal but before
windows can load he gets a couple of error messages
windows\system32\config\system corrupt&missing file
systems\32\drivers\ntfs.sys

sometimes it reboots itself several times then eventually starts up but
sometimes he has to reboot manually.

he has tried restoring to an earlier time but gets the message unable to
restore.

He has'nt got the windows installation disc so is unable to restore the
missing file.

Best Regards Chris

Have you done a Search for this file on your harddrive? You should find
at least 3 or 4 copies of it. Delete the one in the Drivers directory and
copy & past the one from the ServicePack\i386 to the Drivers directory
and reboot. Make sure you select the 562Kb file. If that file is also
corrupt
you may need to do a SFC - System File Checker under Safe Mode.
Start>Run>type SFC /SCANNOW >click OK (space between C and /)
This will replace missing or corrupt system files. Have your WindowsXP
CD handy for it may ask for it to copy the missing/corrupt file(s).

If he hasn't got the windows installation disk, the time is fast approaching
when one will have to be obtained. You can borrow any XP boot CD to get
into the Recovery Console to fix the damaged registry problem.

But for running the System File Checker, a repair install or a new install,
your own CD and license key will be required.

The registry problem can be fixed with the steps at this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/

The NTFS.sys damage can be repaired with these steps, but require the
installation media.
