Missing file when booting windows XP

Hope you can help me with this. I have almost tried everything now.

When I boot up my computer, I get a message that says I'm missing a file
called system32.exe from the following directory:
C:WINDOWS\system32\system32.exe
I believe this is a virus, but am not sure, because I recently scanned my
computer with several virus programs. The message still pops up, and my
computer is very slow when booting to the desktop.

What shall I do??
