Xp Pro Booting Up

Hi There,

I have got a problem with windows booting up - IT WONT!!!

Message comes up saying

"Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupT:

<Windows Root> \ System32\Hal.dll

What are my options? Shall i just boot up with wondows cd and go to repair?
will this save all my files?

Any ideas as how to this could have happened?
